Wow, you guys really came through! Such amazing recommendations - what a list, even leaving out the ones I've already read I have 40 or so books to investigate! Thank you!
Since you recommended so many to me, I thought it only fitting that I should pass along some of my favorites to you, so here goes!
Orcs by Stan Nicholls (this is just fun, life from the Orcs point of view, not as evil as you might think)
The Three Musketeers by Andre Dumas (swashbuckling, evil plots, a damsel in distress, secret affairs - what's better than this?)
Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell by Susanna Clark (all consuming, I loved it)
If on a Winter's Night a Traveler by Italo Calvino (existential, right up my alley)
American Gods (or anything) by Neil Gaiman (I love the way Gaiman marries old gods with modern life, the idea of these hidden facets of society is entrancing for me)
The Devil in the White City by Erik Larson (the one non-fiction book in the list, it reads like a novel)
The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova (vampire nonsense, but oh so good)
The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield (this book sucked me in and wouldn't let go, completely absorbing)
The Thursday Next Series by Jasper Fforde (lots of fun, very whimsical and great for literature buffs, the references he throws in there are vast!)
The Gap series by Stephen R. Donaldson (dark and spacey, should go back and read it again, it's been at least 10 years)
A Hardboiled Wonderland and the End of the World by Huraki Murakami (more existential stuff, but a really good read if you don't mind being totally confused)
Carter Beats the Devil by Glen David Gold (Just a really good story)
The Life of Pi by Yann Martel (some say it has religious meaning, personally I just really liked the story)
Perdido Street Station by China Mieville (scifi/fantasy - deep, oh so deep)
Mysteries
The Lincoln Rhyme series by Jeffrey Deaver
The Prey series by John Sandford
Well that's enough of that - on to the winners!
I am going to list your names in order, but I have only emailed the first person so far, as soon as I hear from her I will email the next person and so on. I realize I have made this super complicated and it's probably going to take a week or so to hear from everybody, but hang in there, I will get to everybody!
First - Kaite
Second - Wooly Lainy
Third - Wollgut
Fourth - Carla
Fifth - Kimberly
Sixth - Turtle
Seventh - Jessie
Eighth - Rachel O.
Thanks so much to everyone for playing!
